The Problem

This Custom GPT solves the real-world problem of helping professionals—especially educators and corporate trainers—successfully transition into instructional design roles by translating their existing skills into ID-specific language, guiding project development, offering tool tutorials, and supporting resume and portfolio creation. This is important because many professionals have transferable skills but struggle to translate them into instructional design language. The ID Transitional Coach bridges that gap by providing guidance, tool support, and project development help—empowering users to confidently enter the field.

The Solution

I created a Custom GPT that serves as a virtual Instructional Design (ID) Transition Coach. It helps professionals—especially educators and corporate trainers—translate their existing skills into ID-specific terms, guides them through project development, provides tutorials for key tools like Articulate Storyline and Rise, and offers support with resumes, portfolios, and learning paths. The GPT acts as an always-available mentor to reduce confusion and accelerate the transition process.

This solution is ideal because transitioning into instructional design can be overwhelming without clear guidance or access to experienced mentors. The Custom GPT provides just-in-time, risk-free support tailored to individual needs, allowing users to explore ID concepts, tools, and practices at their own pace. It’s a low-cost, scalable way to give users confidence and direction—especially those without access to formal training or coaching.

Design Process

I created the ID Transition Coach Custom GPT by first identifying the key challenges faced by professionals entering instructional design—such as translating existing skills, navigating new tools, and building a portfolio. I then defined the GPT’s purpose, designed structured prompt flows aligned with adult learning principles, and curated example conversations to guide users through tasks like resume writing, project planning, and tool tutorials. Using OpenAI’s Custom GPT builder, I configured instructions, and more importanly rules for both my trainer and users. I added in conversation starters to encourage users to choose a topic to begin a conversation with the trainer. I scaffolded the trainers responses so answers were open-ended and encouraged the user to continue asking questions as needed.

I then uploaded relevant resources, and tested the model to ensure it provided accurate, supportive, and personalized guidance for users.
